My name is Lilian Yaffe and I'm a writer
I was born in Cali, Colombia, in 1966. I lived there for many years, and had my three wonderful children.
In 1999 we moved to the United States due to persistent violence and political instability in Colombia. We have lived there ever since.
I graduated from Icesi University in Cali and received my PhD in International Studies from the University of Miami (UM). I love to study and learn and graduated with high honors.
For many years I was a professor and researcher at both universities, teaching courses in Political Economy and International Relations, among others. I taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Literature has always been my passion and is a very important part of my life. My favorite authors are Gabriel García Marquez, Octavio Paz, Isabel Allende and Irene Vallejo.
I have always enjoyed jogging and more recently started to hike. I love classical music, chilled white wine and sunsets at the beach.
My novel Mariposa Azul Cobalto has been published by Editorial Planeta. I'm very excited to share this fascinating story with you.
Meet my novel Mariposa Azul Cobalto
Mariposa Azul Cobalto emerges from reality and imagination, where truth and fiction erase borders and blur memories, leading the reader to an unexpected ending.
Abstract
A wealthy family from Cali, marked by different tragedies and secrets; two sisters who are very different from one another; a journalist who seeks to unravel the story of a kidnapping that occurred twenty years ago; and a man trying to build a life far from violence and pain—these are the characters of this fast-paced novel, inspired by real events, were truth and fiction blur boundaries and distort memories, leading the reader to an unexpected ending.
"There are episodes in life that mark you forever. Being kidnapped for seven months by the guerrillas split my life in two and, even today, I wonder if I will ever be able to piece together the fragments left from that rupture, and to reconcile within myself the division of those two times.
When my kidnapping ended, I promised myself that I would never tell this story, for two reasons I once considered obvious. On one hand, I knew that to narrate it I would have to relive, one by one, excruciating and painful events, and I wasn't sure I could bear it. On the other hand, the possibility of retaliation from my captors—against me or my family— filled me with an overwhelming fear"
Mariposa Azul Cobalto takes place in Colombia at the end of the 20th century, a time when guerrillas and drug cartels unofficially ruled the country. The novel tells stories that meander in parallel, surprisingly crossing in paths of love, deception and pain.
